Regarding the Position

The technological direction of Dimagi is handled by the Global Technology Division (GTD). Dimagi is looking for an ambitious applicant with a technical and project management background to help our efforts. This position can be filled remotely from South Africa or from our headquarters in Cape Town, South Africa. It will be necessary for you to plan your working hours so that they either coincide with EST or with those of your immediate team.

Due to the nature of what we offer, the work will be tough, but in a good manner; you’ll get the chance to get right in and learn about a variety of project areas while also having a meaningful, beneficial influence. In order to increase a team’s effectiveness, we are seeking for both leaders and teachers who are charting the team’s strategic course and who carve out time for project management advice, instruction, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

as an engineering manager you will:

  • Manage a group of engineers and technical personnel to maximize their potential, contribute to the team’s development, and ensure that team deliverables are completed on time.
  • Utilize project management techniques to take responsibility for the execution of technical workstreams. This includes proactively ensuring that technical requirements and deadlines are understood, managing technical efforts, and communicating status updates and information gaps.
  • Help determine the importance of technical requests and guide the engineering roadmap by working with our team leads, engineering managers, tech leads, applications engineers, and engineers.
  • Conduct retrospectives on product and sprint development to learn how engineering and team processes may be enhanced and refined.
  • In order to promote awareness of technical capabilities and constraints, time frames, and expectations to set externally, communicate with our project delivery team.
  • To manage and take responsibility for technical project deliverables, work with engineers and requirements owners.
  • Organize requests for project resources and streamline communications with delivery teams

relevant expertise

  • We are primarily searching for people that are intelligent, competent, and impact-driven for this position.
  • five or more years of experience managing software teams
  • Direct experience managing people as well as proven abilities managing technical projects involving multiple people
  • Excellent communication skills, both in writing and speaking.
  • experience in project management
  • The ability to plan ahead and be organized will lead to successful implementation and follow-through

Extra Skills

  • experience in product management or software development
  • a working knowledge of some of the technologies we use (Python, Django, SQL, Javascript/jQuery, HTML5/CSS, Knockout, CouchDB, Postgres)
  • working in foreign development and/or using technology for social benefit with enthusiasm
