Description

As a Research Officer – Inclusive Agricultural Finance, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is looking for a dynamic and multi-skilled applicant to join its office in Pretoria, South Africa.

IWMI is looking for a research officer to use research and development to address Africa’s concerns with food, water, and climate change. The chosen applicant will collaborate closely with the Ukama Ustawi Work Package Three team (Business Acceleration) to assist efforts connected to the announcement of an application call for the accelerator program’s initial cohort.

Therefore, the applicant should be well-versed in agricultural economics and agricultural development, as well as having practical knowledge of creating experimental research for financial and business models.

The research officer is tasked with conducting development-related research on equitable and sustainable funding models for agricultural and water management innovations and solutions in East and Southern Africa. Technical knowledge of water management and farming systems in a changing environment will be combined in research methodologies. The individual will support partnerships and interaction between the public and private sectors to hasten investment in agricultural innovation scaling and uptake. The applicant will also assist in monitoring the CGIAR Regional Integrated Initiative’s climate-smart research initiatives in East and Southern Africa.

DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Create inclusive financing mechanisms for investments in inventions that are climate resilient,
  • Design research is being done to create irrigation funding models and investment cases for agriculture that is climate resilient.
  • Give the Food Systems Accelerator program, which spans four African nations, administrative help.
  • co-create and put into practice a framework for climate-smart agriculture that allows agri-investors to quantify sustainability outputs.
  • Participate in the research outputs produced as a result of the technical support offered to agribusinesses participating in the Food Systems Accelerator.
  • encourage partnerships and engagement between the public and commercial sectors to hasten investment in agricultural innovation uptake and scale,
  • Organize and facilitate relationships and cooperation with academic institutions, government agencies, and companies involved in East and Southern African finance, agricultural, and irrigation.
  • Help the public and commercial sectors scale up the inclusive finance model for investments in technologies that are climate resilient.
  • Create an investor database and identify prospective investors.

Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE:

  • a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as agricultural economics, development studies, finance, business management, or business administration.
  • a minimum of two years of expertise in financial business models, development studies, or research and development relating to agricultural financing and investment.
  • familiarity with and knowledge of the agri-entrepreneurship industry.
  • knowledge of working with partners from the private sector and research organizations across disciplines.
  • experience from a prior internship in venture capital, private equity, or startups.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • exhibited enthusiasm for inclusive business, sustainable finance, and corporate sustainability.
  • proficiency in designing and carrying out field research in a systems thinking framework using a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods and participatory approaches.
  • strong English communication skills for conveying study findings.

LANGUAGE:

  • Excellent listening and communication skills in addition to high verbal and written English language proficiency.
  • knowledge of the regional tongues used in cocoa-producing areas.
