Extended Description

The Programme Specialist (Water Quality) will particularly:

  • Participate actively in the creation, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of project and programmed activities in compliance with the IHP strategic plan and the associated operational plan as defined in the C4/C5 with a focus on water quality and related concerns such as ecohydrology.
  • Help IHP National Committees and Member States achieve IHP priorities relating to water quality and associated concerns by facilitating and supporting research, networking, and capacity building programs.
  • In collaboration with pertinent Category II Centers and Chairs, provide a significant contribution to the creation of high-quality scientific knowledge base, data, tools, and approaches to address water quality and pollution concerns.
  • Through the organization of scientific events, workshops, training sessions, exhibitions, and outreach initiatives, promote and facilitate the deployment of water quality-related tools and products in Member States, produce pertinent publications, and ensure widespread distribution of tools and publications to Member States and stakeholders.
  • Keep in touch with academic, professional, and UN groups. Establish and support a scientific network focused on water quality and related problems.
  • Develop concept notes and project proposals based on situational analysis, needs assessments, and the Programme and Budget (C/5) in order to support activities and implementations, monitor related projects and programmes in line with approved objectives, and help to mobilize and raise extrabudgetary resources.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Advanced university education (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the disciplines of chemistry, chemical or civil engineering, limnology, soil and water management, or allied earth sciences; or in the fields of hydrology, water resources, or environmental science or engineering.
  • An advantage would be if the applicant has a PhD in hydrology, environmental science, environmental chemistry, water chemistry, environmental technology, soil water balance modeling, land and water management, or a closely related discipline in the earth sciences.

Experience at Work

  • At least four (4) years of relevant professional experience, ideally two (2) years of which were gained at an international level, in the fields of hydrology, hydrogeology, or soil water balance modeling.

Technical expertise

  • experience and technical understanding in ecohydrology, pollution control, and water quality.
  • Understanding of water chemistry and science, watershed management and protection, hydrology and hydraulics, environmental data systems, environmental law, water resource management using remote sensing, and environmental data systems.
  • papers from relevant scientific fields on topics including ecohydrology, microplastic awareness, pollution prevention, modeling techniques, watershed management, and environmental preservation.

  • The Organization’s working languages are English and French. It is advantageous to have strong French and English language skills (both in writing and speaking).

The pay at UNESCO are made up of a base salary and, when appropriate, additional benefits like: a family stipend, 30 days of yearly leave, health insurance, a pension plan, etc.

The beginning compensation for this position is around 99 451 US dollars per year.
