• The Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship offers an excellent early career journalist a unique opportunity to conduct an investigation within a newspaper. The chosen candidate will work for Durham University as a Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS), where they will be required to find and cultivate a network of academics who can assist them in their investigative journalism practise.
• The Fellowship comes with a monthly income of around £4,444, a living allowance of £1,250, and a one-time grant of £1,800 for travel and associated costs. If the chosen candidate is currently employed by a news organisation or media outlet and takes time off to pursue the Fellowship, Durham University will pay up to a maximum of £12,000 to their current employer to cover temporary staff costs.

Scholarship Offer:

• A young journalist with the Sir Harry Evans Global Fellowship will have the chance to refine their reporting and research techniques. It comprises of a nine-month Durham University fellowship where the winner is supposed to conduct an investigation from a newsroom. They will be overseen by Reuters editors or other media partners, have access to academics, and use research facilities.
• The Fellowship gives participants the ability to develop ideas and establish collaborations within a vibrant community of journalists while receiving support from some of the most distinguished researchers in the world. The commencement of the 2024 Fellowship is anticipated to occur as soon as practicable after March1, 2024, assuming that all applicable immigration requirements are met.
• Durham University will offer one of the candidates a post as a Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) if they are chosen. With the help of their peers in the IAS, the Fellow will be expected to identify and establish a network of scholars within the University to support their investigative journalistic practice. To fulfill the requirements of the fellowship, this shall be done. In order to share what they have learnt and advance the University’s broader understanding of journalism, the Fellow will provide a public seminar on their experiences during the Fellowship at the IAS.
• The Fellowship’s monthly remuneration is around £4,444, which equates to a pro-rata pay of about £53,333 each year. There is also a monthly living allowance of £1,250 and a one-time payment of £1,800 to cover expenses related to travel and the internship.
• If the applicant is already employed by a news or media business and takes a period of leave to pursue the Fellowship, Durham University will, subject to certain terms and conditions, pay up to a maximum of £12,000 to the successful candidate’s current employer to cover the costs of temporary personnel. However, this is only true if the candidate is an active worker for the company.

Submissions for the 2024 Fellowship are due on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at noon BST. A fellowship committee will review all submissions.

• A succinct statement (no more than 500 words) outlining your background, your goals for the fellowship, and how your vision of journalism aligns with that of the fellowship.
• A thorough proposal for an investigation project you want to conduct during the Fellowship (up to 800 words).

• A one- or two-page CV or resume that has a link to your LinkedIn profile.
• It is necessary to submit up to four published examples of prior work, at least two of which must be text-based. This might be a paper with references to examples that are available online.
• A letter of recommendation from an editor who has collaborated closely with you and assessed your ability in the field of investigative journalism.

Scholarship eligibility.

• Candidates who are qualified will be in the early stages of their careers and have previous professional journalism experience.
• Applications may be considered on a case-by-case basis if the prospective applicant is not currently employed as a journalist but has experience working in an investigative reporting capacity in a related professional field (for example, leading publications and campaigns for human rights or other socio-political issues; authoring or conducting research for authoritative investigative work; or creating in-field photo- or video-research projects, documentaries, or exhibits
• Following the above-described procedures and structure, applicants must submit their applications.
• We welcome applications from all qualified applicants, regardless of where they may currently be stationed in the world, as the Fellowship is a worldwide opportunity. The chosen candidate must meet all immigration requirements in order to participate in the Fellowship, which will take place in both Durham and London.
