Institutional Goals and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading international environmental organization that establishes the global environmental agenda, encourages the consistent application of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the framework of the United Nations, and acts as a powerful spokesperson for the environment worldwide. The Corporate Services Division (CSD) is responsible for protecting UNEP’s corporate interests by reducing risk exposure and providing the organization with the most recent management tools, best practices, and capacity building. In accordance with pertinent accountability standards, rules, and regulations, CSD monitors UNEP’s effective management as well as adherence to the UN’s basic values. The Science Policy Business Forum (SPBF) Unit of UNEP’s Corporate Services Division (CSD) is where this position is based. The Associate Programme Management Officer will be in charge of the following tasks within the scope of their delegated authority and under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer, Science Policy Business Forum Unit:

  • Deliver the program on schedule and assist in the creation of the main outputs listed below for the Science Policy Business Forum (SPBF) at SPBF@ AMCEN, the Africa Climate Summit, COP28, UNEA6, DEAL 2023–2024, SPBF Africa 2024, and SPBF Asia Pacific.
  • Participate in the input for program 713.2 linking to the Science Policy Interface, coordinating with the program coordinator and ensuring alignment with the Mid Term Strategy, Program of Work, and Related Projects of UNEP.
  • Identify and suggest attendees, suggest an agenda with major streams and subjects, prepare background materials and presentations, handle logistics, etc., all while providing substantive programmatic assistance for consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc.

Monitoring and analyzing specific aspects of program/project development and implementation, including the review of pertinent documents and reports.

  • Participates in the creation, execution, and evaluation of assigned programs, projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes program/project development and implementation; reviews pertinent documents and reports; identifies issues and problems that need to be resolved and suggests corrective actions; coordinates with pertinent parties; and determines and tracks follow-up actions.
  • investigates, evaluates, and presents data acquired from various sources.
  • aids in the creation of policies, including the review and analysis of problems and trends, the creation of assessments or other research projects.
  • carries out survey projects, develops data collection methods, examines, analyzes, and interprets replies, finds issues/problems, and writes up conclusions.
  • drafts background papers, analyses, report and study sections, contributions to publications, and other written outputs.
  • carries out outreach initiatives, runs seminars, workshops, etc., and gives presentations on given subjects or activities.
  • Participates in or leads field missions, including writing mission summaries and giving advice to other parties such as external consultants, government representatives, and others.
  • Coordinates budget and funding-related tasks (such as project and program planning and submission, financial reporting, and progress reports) and creates relevant paperwork (such as pledges, work plans, and budgets for programs).
  • Uses data visualization techniques to contribute to the collection, analysis, and identification of trends and patterns while providing preliminary insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation, and reporting.

Education

It would be ideal to have a graduate degree from an advanced university (Master’s level or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics, or a similar discipline. The first-level university degree may be accepted in place of the advanced university degree if it is combined with the necessary work experience. An advantage is having successfully completed both degree-granting and non-degree-granting data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs.

Experience at Work

It takes at least two years of steadily increasing responsibility in project or program management, administration, or a similar field. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of experience in data analytics or a similar field (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree).

Languages

The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. The listed position requires fluency in English. It would be ideal to know another official UN language. NOTE: “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas, while “Fluency” equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, and understand).

Assessment

An assessment exercise and a competency-based interview may both be used to evaluate competent individuals.
