Position Description

Summary of the position:

She or he will identify legal needs in the industry and offer advice, information, and legal choices under the direction of the Legal Manager. The legal officer will be in charge of organizing legal information sessions, managing legal cases and following up with clients, and raising knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of refugees under Ugandan law.

responsibilities and obligations

  • to collaborate with neighborhood watch and other community organizations to promote local advocacy efforts with the protection officers
  • Provide information and legal choices to refugees and other people of concern through on-site legal counseling.
  • To safeguard refugees and other vulnerable people, you should provide legal information sessions on human rights and important laws.
  • Manage cases and follow-up on legal matters with the appropriate authorities.
  • Work closely with the police to give survivors and witnesses the help they need.
  • Send in weekly and daily statistics, together with a description of any high-risk instances, to help guide the right course of action.
  • As instructed by the supervisor, take part in legal trainings.
  • Support for holding legal informational sessions on refugee rights and obligations, major crimes and punishments in Uganda, and Ugandan human rights and laws pertaining to refugees and other people of concern.
  • Help the senior legal officer analyze data, highlight trends, and determine what legal protection refugees and other vulnerable people need.
  • To gather information on specific protection and/or legal concerns, assistance is provided in conducting focus groups and one-on-one interviews with refugees, host communities, state actors, and service providers.
  • Assist the senior legal officer in providing targeted audiences with legal training on domestic and international legal frameworks.
  • carry out any further tasks as directed by the senior legal officer.

Qualifications

  • law bachelor’s degree
  • preferably with a global organization, at least two (2) years of prior professional experience in a position similar.

  • Strong communication abilities, particularly the capacity to win over new communities and forge partnerships.
  • a thorough knowledge of international law relating to refugees and human rights;
  • basic knowledge of Microsoft Word on computers.
