Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. In total, UN-Habitat works in over 90 countries to advance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the local level, in accordance with the commitments and principles set out in the New Urban Agenda. The position is located within the Regional Office for Africa (ROAF), UN-HABITAT, Nairobi, Kenya.

Under the umbrella of the Blue Economy, the overall objective of the Go Blue programme is to unlock the potential of sea-land opportunities in coastal urban centres for sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth with employment impact, while conserving and sustainably using the coastal and marine environment as well as promoting effective and integrated maritime governance.Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the overall supervision of the Task Manager for Kenya and direct supervision of the Go Blue Project Manager, the Programme Management intern will:

 Support the Go Blue project team, ROAF, in conducting research on selected themes around issues of land-sea integrated planning; including conducting literature review; collect, analyze, interpret,and present primary and secondary data and other information gathered from diverse resources.
 Assist in the preparation of concept notes, speeches background papers, technical papers, publications. 
 Substantively edit reports prepared by the teams in ROAF.
 Assist in the implementation of programmes in ROAF.
 Support ROAF teams in drafting reports and publications.
 Assist in planning and organizing ROAF meetings, preparing mission files, power point presentations, and providing follow-up actions for activities that support smooth running of ROAF.
 Perform any other tasks as may be assigned from time to time by ROAF.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent)

c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of studies: Urban or Regional Planning, Housing, Architecture, International Relations, Diplomacy, Social Sciences, or any other related field

Excellent communication skills, writing, visualization of data and/or graphic design, and proficiency in computer software applications is required

Knowledge of thematic blue economy, climate change and urban resilience is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
