Mission and objectives

UNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. UNFPA’s strategic plan (2022-2025), reaffirms the relevance of the current strategic direction of UNFPA and focuses on three transformative results: to end preventable maternal deaths; end unmet need for family planning; and end gender-based violence and harmful practices. These results capture our strategic commitments on accelerating progress towards realizing the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and SDGs in the Decade of Action leading up to 2030.

Context

UNFPA Kenya wishes to recruit a United Nations Volunteer (UNV) to support the implementation of the 10th CP, particularly the work around adolescents and youth sexual reproductive health. The UNV will support interventions aimed at ensuring that adolescents and youth have increased their capacity to participate and lead in policies and programmes on population and development, sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence and harmful practices at all levels, including in humanitarian settings. Specifically, he or she will support interventions aimed at: a) Expanding leadership spaces and preparedness of young people in their diversity to participate in decision-making and development processes, prioritizing issues related to SRH, HIV, GBV, harmful practices, humanitarian action and peacebuilding; b) Operationalizing in-school and out-of-school education for health and well-being; c) Promoting innovative adolescent and youth-led initiatives aimed at advancing the transformative results d) Strengthening linkages between programmes on SRHR, HIV, GBV and harmful practices and programmes on youth economic empowerment; and e) Establishing the National Youth Index The work will entail working with the Government of Kenya, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Youth led organizations, and young people.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the ASRH& Youth Specialist, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

 Familiarize self with UNFPA programme activities particularly around AYSRH including the AYSRH social and policy environment, through interaction with colleagues and reading relevant documents.
 Support documentation and knowledge sharing on current and emerging trends in ASRH/HIV&AIDS by analysing programmes, projects, strategies, approaches and best practices.
 Assist in preparation of AYSRH related programme and policy documents including concept notes, reports, policies, guidelines, speeches, position papers and policy briefs
 Support implementing partners in preparation of annual work plans to ensure timely submission of work-plans and budgets, reports and other relevant documents and effective implementation of the project activities.
 Support advocacy and resource mobilization efforts of the Country Office 
 Participate in various technical working groups relating to adolescent/youth Sexual and reproductive health
 Make preparatory arrangements for programme related seminars/workshops and meetings, including monitoring activities.
 Support the strengthening of UNFPA youth networks including the development of a practical framework for strengthening meaningful youth participation internally and in national processes.
 Perform any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

This assignment is funded by the Government of Kazakhstan, therefore only citizens of Kazakhstan are eligible to apply. Proficiency in English is required for all assignments.

Required experience

1 years of experience in in Adolescent/Youth Reproductive Health programmes/project management/Youth Empowerment/Public Policy development and analysis and research and advocacy in the public or private sector

 Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
 Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
 Strong verbal and written communication skills.
 Proficiency in current office software applications and corporate IT systems

The Republic of Kenya is located in the Eastern Africa region. The population is approximately 47 million people according to the 2019 Population Census. Its capital city is Nairobi located in the South-central part of the country. Kenya is amongst the large economies in Sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria and South Africa. It is the regional hub providing easy connectivity to the region. It is bordered by South Sudan to the northwest, Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Uganda to the west, Tanzania to the south, the Indian Ocean is located to the southeast.
