This position is located in the United Nations Global Compact Office (UNGC)). The Programme Officer (Governance and Sustainability) reports to the Head of Entity. The focus of this position is to temporarily lead the work of the UN Global Compact’s governance including implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes, operations and other activities in the assigned functional areas. The United Nations Global Compact is the United Nations’ voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas. The Global Compact Office is the United Nations entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stakeholders by promoting partnerships and collective action in support of the United Nations (UN), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Programme Officer (Governance and Sustainability) will be responsible for the following duties: • Develops, implements and evaluates activities related to human resources management, culture and diversity and inclusion, including with a view to implementation of the Secretary-General’s Anti-Racism strategy in the context of the Global Compact initiative. • Develops, implements and evaluates activities related to Strategic Planning across the initiative including among the Local Networks in all regions of the world; Monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports including evaluations of the Global Compact’s work; identifies problems and issues to be addressed at HQ level and at regional level and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties including Regional Heads; ensures follow-up actions. • Provides advice and guidance in the areas of human resources management, travel management, staff engagement and office administration, ensuring the Global Compact Office’s compliance with all UN policies and procedures. • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources in relation to the UN Global Compact’s strategic priorities, coherence of policies, and governance issues. • Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies in the areas of the Global Compact’s accountability and governance, Strategic Planning and Diversity and Inclusion. • Generates survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identify problems/issues and prepares conclusions to inform management decisions on strategy implementation, human resources management and staff engagement. • Organizes and prepares written outputs, including the development of the UN Global Compact’s Annual Plan for 2024, to be submitted to Global Compact Donors. • Draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications in the areas of strategic planning as well undertake a review of the UN Global Compact’s participant base in order to recommend actions to the Executive Office of the Secretary-General for managing companies in high-risk sectors (i.e. weapons manufacturing, fossil fuels etc). • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc. including UN Global Compact Board Meetings and the Global Compact’s Annual Local Network Forum, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc. • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, etc.; makes presentations. • Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries. • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.). • Performs other duties as required.

Education
An Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in business administration, management, economics, political science, law, international relations, public administration, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
• A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.
• A minimum of five years of experience in programmes and initiatives related to the UN Global Compact (human rights, labour, environment, anti-corruption, integrity, UN relations, etc.) including leading/managing multi-stakeholder initiatives and multilateral processes is required.
• Experience in the private sector and international organizations such as the United Nations or similar international organization is required.
• Experience in office management and administration in the United Nations or similarly international organization is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
