Terms of Reference: Part-Time Graphic Designer

Development Gateway: An IREX Venture (DG) is an international non-profit organization with team members based in more than 10 countries worldwide. For over 20 years, DG has researched data ecosystems, built digital tools to support those data ecosystems, and advised on data strategy and digital transformation to strengthen decision-making, transparency, and service delivery. We support a variety of partners in over seventy countries around the globe to better collect, analyze, visualize, and use data by building digital tools, creating strong incentive structures and processes, and providing training and support.

This position is a consultancy with a highly variable number of hours. We anticipate needing 20 to 30 hours each month in the first four months, with a lower number of hours each month after, to be estimated on a quarterly basis.

Scope of Work and Requirements:

DG works on a wide range of topics and we strive to provide our clients with high-quality deliverables that are well-designed and visually engaging. This consultancy will sit on DG’s Communications team and graphic design support for DG’s Strategic Communications and Programs teams. The consultant will work directly to build out DG’s brand collateral.

Given this context, the Graphic Designer will:

 Design marketing collateral for special projects, such as annual reports, high-priority publications, anniversaries, and other campaigns.
 Light product design support for digital products, including select website features, email newsletters, website and social banners, and social media graphics.
 Create graphic elements that easily convey complex topics and that can be used across a variety of platforms, including icons and graphics to represent our areas of work
 Have experience working with existing design guidelines (preferably within the UN or US government context)
 Update basic templates for reports, white papers, and other written deliverables that meet DG’s graphic design needs
 Respond quickly with availability to design new deliverables, and/or be able to give notice if unavailable for an extended period of time 
 Set expectations and deadlines to ensure deliverables are completed in accordance with DG’s needs and the Consultant’s existing responsibilities
 An interest in translating complex data and policy-related content into compelling visuals
 A strong eye for detail
 Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
 Excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills
 Commitment to inclusive and accessible design principles

Bonus skills include:

 Experience as a cartoonist/graphic artist
 Experience with data visualizations
 Experience with WordPress

The portfolio might, for example, include work on reports, white papers, templates, or other graphic design elements created by you in support of written deliverables.

Payment:

The expected pay of this consultancy is between $25 and $40 per hour based on experience and location. Several deliverables are anticipated from February – April 2024, thereafter on an ad-hoc basis. If it is a good fit, ad-hoc assignments will continue on an as-needed basis.

The Consultant is responsible for sending in actual hours worked in a given month by the 5th working day of the following month. An invoice template will be provided to the Consultant to facilitate ease of tracking hours.
