BirdLife International recently commenced an exciting project to redevelop our DataZone into a cutting-edge conservation knowledge hub. The platform will include new and improved features such as interactive maps, dashboards and factsheets that will facilitate easier access to data on bird species and important sites for their conservation.
As part of this project, we will be enriching our species factsheets by adding photos of each bird species. We are therefore looking for volunteers to help source and catalogue images of all 11,000+ bird species worldwide.
What will you be doing? Your role will involve:
Searching online for suitable photos
Contacting photographers to ask for permission to use their photos
Checking identification of species
Cataloguing photos in Microsoft Excel eESvRsh u3CGm
Organising image files
This work can be done remotely from anywhere in the world, as long as you have access to a computer and an internet connection. We would ask you to commit to at least 10 hours a week, or more if available, but we can be flexible with days and work around your schedule. This work will be ongoing until the end of July 2024, or until all photos have been sourced and catalogued.
The skills that you need
Excellent bird identification skills
An eye for a good image
Good written communication skills
Good organisational skills, including the ability to work independently and manage your own time
Good computer skills, including the use of the internet and Microsoft Excel
